چکیده

Bessel beams are of great interest due to their unique non-diffractive properties. Using a conical prism or an objective paired with an annular aperture are two typical approaches to generating zeroth order Bessel beams. However, the former approach has a limited numerical aperture (NA), and the latter suffers from low efficiency since most of the incident light is blocked by the aperture. Furthermore, an additional phase-modulating element is needed to generate higher-order Bessel beams, which in turn adds complexity and bulkiness to the system. We overcome these problems using dielectric metasurfaces to realize meta-axicons with additional functionalities not achievable with conventional means. We demonstrate meta-axicons with high NA up to 0.9 capable of generating Bessel beams with full-width at half-maximum about as small as ~λ/3 (λ = 405 nm). Importantly, these Bessel beams have transverse intensity profiles independent of wavelength across the visible spectrum. These meta-axicons can enable advanced research and applications related to Bessel beams, such as laser fabrication, imaging, and optical manipulation.

Generation of achromatic Bessel beams using a compensated spatial light modulator.

We report the creation of white-light, achromatic Bessel beams using a spatial light modulator and a prism to compensate for the dispersion. Unlike the Bessel beam created by a refractive axicon, this achromatic beam has a radial wavevector and hence an intensity cross-section which is independent of wavelength. The technique also lends itself to the generation of higher order Bessel beams with...

Catenary nanostructures as compact Bessel beam generators

Non-diffracting Bessel beams, including zero-order and high-order Bessel Beams which carry orbital angular momentum (OAM), enable a variety of important applications in optical micromanipulation, sub-diffraction imaging, high speed photonics/quantum communication, etc. The commonly used ways to create Bessel beams, including an axicon or a digital hologram written to a spatial light modulator (...

Optical metasurfaces for polarization-controlled beam shaping.

We have developed multifunctional optical beam shapers based on plasmonic metasurfaces. The metasurfaces are composed of subwavelength-spaced polarization- and wavelength-selective optical nanoantennas that allow encoding several beam shapers on a single element. We demonstrate numerically and experimentally beam shapers that can be used to switch between arbitrary beam shapes. We specifically ...

Generation of diffraction-free plasmonic beams with one-dimensional Bessel profiles.

We demonstrate experimentally generation of diffraction-free plasmonic beams with zeroth- and first-order Bessel intensity profiles using axicon-like structures fabricated on gold film surfaces and designed to operate at a wavelength of 700 nm. The central beam features a very low divergence (~8π mrad) for a narrow waist of the order of one wavelength and the ability to self reconstruct, which ...

Efficient nonlinear generation of high power, higher order, ultrafast "perfect" vortices in green.

We report on efficient nonlinear generation of ultrafast, higher order "perfect" vortices at the green wavelength. Based on Fourier transformation of the higher order Bessel-Gauss (BG) beam generated through the combination of the spiral phase plate and axicon, we have transformed the Gaussian beam of the ultrafast Yb-fiber laser at 1060 nm into perfect vortices of power 4.4 W and order up to 6...
